DID YOU KNOW THAT IN LIGURIA THERE IS A TOWER COMPLETELY SURROUNDED BY THE SEA?
We are in La Spezia, in the heart of the Golfo dei Poeti, exactly opposite the north-eastern tip of the island of Palmaria, Punta Scola, in the municipality of Portovenere. Here stands on a rock, in the middle of the sea, a marvellous 16th-17th century tower, Torre Scola, also called the Tower of St John the Baptist.
WHY WAS TORRE SCOLA BUILT?
Torre Scola, like other coastal watchtowers and defence towers along the Ligurian coastline, was integrated into the defence system established by the Senate of the Republic of Genoa between the 16th and 17th centuries to protect the coastline, towns and villages. Constructed in 1606 by the Republic of Genoa, it was built to defend La Spezia from Spanish and Turkish attacks, thanks to its strategic position and providing an excellent view of the sea. It is one of Palmaria's defensive posts, together with the more recent forts Cavour and Umberto I and the Batteria del Semaforo.
THE RESILIENT TOWER
The Tower has a majestic, pentagonal structure with mighty walls up to 4 metres thick and encapsulates centuries of military history and maritime adventures. From here, its guardians could observe and protect the arm of the sea between Palmaria Bay, Olivo Bay in Portovenere and the breast of Lerici, at a time when the threat of attack was always imminent. During the tumultuous Napoleonic wars, the tower became the protagonist of naval clashes between English and French fleets, testifying to the courage and determination of its defenders. Although damaged by cannon fire, its resilience withstood time and weather, so much so that it was averted from demolition in 1915 and converted into a beacon. Today, after meticulous restoration between 1976 and 1980, Torre Scola still shines in its former glory, welcoming visitors from all over the world to share its unique history and admire the magnificent panorama from its summit. A symbol of strength and beauty that continues to illuminate the Golfo dei Poeti with its imposing and evocative presence.
